Windows 8.1 HTTP API brings good news to JavaScript app developers

For JavaScript app developers who connect to a Web service, there's a new HTTP API in Windows 8.1 that lets you connect to Web services easier and with a lot more flexibility, according to a post on the Windows App Builder Blog.

?The Windows.Web.HttpClient API gives you access to cookies, control over caching, and can set and get headers using strong types,? writes Microsoft Senior Program Manager Peter Smith. ?There?s also a powerful system for modularizing your network code, giving it access to the HTTP processing pipeline.?

More good news: It?s available for C++ or .NET developers? apps, too.

Check out the Windows App Builder Blog for an overview of HttpClient programming and a walkthrough on how to convert your JavaScript apps to use the new API.

Vodafone UK offering 4GB of bonus data on 4G-ready plans

Vodafone UK

Customers moving to 4G plans also receive unlimited data for three months

Gearing up for the expansion of its 4G LTE network in late September, Vodafone UK is offering new plans in a promotion it is calling "4G Bonus". Customers signing up for new 12 or 24 month contracts with Vodafone on its new "4G-ready" plans will receive double the standard amount of data it offers, plus an additional 4GB of data for the life of their contract.

This means for someone who goes for the entry-level plan and opts to be 4G-ready will get 6GB of data per month instead of the standard 1GB on a regular plan — and the starting price for such a plan with 6GB of data and unlimited talk and texts is just £26 per month.

As a gesture to those who signed up for its 4G-ready plans before this point, Vodafone is extending the 4GB of additional data to anyone who is already a customer at no additional cost. For those wanting to switch carriers or plans starting with this promotion, you have until the end of October to get on-board. You can find a full chart breakdown of the new plans and prices after the break.

Restaurant renovations to boost Bob Evans shares: Barron's

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Shares of Bob Evans Farms Inc are poised to extend their steep gains this year as an ongoing plan to remodel the company's namesake restaurants boosts same-store sales, financial weekly Barron's said on Sunday.

The company has updated about 70 percent of its restaurants, with the renovated locations posting same-store sales growth of about 2 percent, the publication said in its September 9 edition. Stores that have not been updated have seen sales fall 1 percent.

Citing analysts at FrontFour Capital Group, Barron's wrote that the stock could climb 30 percent from its current levels. Bob Evans' shares closed Friday at $50.39 and are up 25 percent in 2013.

TransCanada tries to sell merits of Energy East Pipeline in New Brunswick

FREDERICTON - When it comes to people like Cyrille Simard, TransCanada has a challenge in selling the Energy East Pipeline project in New Brunswick.

The mayor of Edmundston says he wants the company to guarantee the west-to-east pipeline, which could traverse his city of 16,000, won't harm the area's watershed.

"They gave us the assurance that it was understood that it is a very important issue and that they would take care of that by bringing some new scenarios of a route," Simard says.

"We're still waiting for that, and we'll see."

As TransCanada (TSX:TRP) wraps up a round of open houses in the province this week to promote the project, it has a sense of the concerns communities have with the $12-billion development, which would see oil shipped from Alberta to the Irving Oil refinery and a proposed export terminal in Saint John.

Simard says TransCanada proposed one route that would venture near residential neighbourhoods, a plan he does not support. He said city council won't give its approval to the project until it is assured the local water supply is protected.

A spokesman for TransCanada said the company's engineers are contacting the City of Edmundston to look into Simard's concerns.

"It is something that we're addressing," said Phillip Cannon.

Cannon said most of the people who have attended the open houses have been examining the proposed route map and want compensation if the route disrupts farming or tree lots during construction. Landowners are being paid to allow surveyors onto their property and the company is negotiating compensation with people if construction of the pipeline disrupts their land, he said.

He said TransCanada is also working to assure residents that pipelines are the safest way to transport large quantities of oil.

"People have to know that lines are equipped with shutoff valves, that we have a control centre in Calgary and all the lines are monitored 24/7," he said.

"If there was a drop in pressure in any line, one of our experts there can shut it down in a matter of minutes and isolate the section that is problematic."

Cannon said many people at the open houses inquire about employment prospects, though details on the number of jobs building the project would generate have yet to be worked out.

"We are still working on the economic study that we'll be rolling out soon where people can get a better idea of more specific jobs by province," Cannon said.

Cannon said more formal public hearings will be scheduled after the company files an application with the National Energy Board to proceed with the development near the end of this year or early in 2014.

The Energy East pipeline project, which still has to clear regulatory reviews, would deliver up to 1.1 million barrels per day from Alberta to Quebec in late 2017. A 1,400-kilometre extension would be built to ship oil to Saint John a year later.

AMERICAN MILITARY MAY BEGIN TRAINING AL-QAEDA LINKED ISLAMIC REBELS FOR SYRIAN CIVIL WAR

Barack Obama would certainly love to see America?s military muscle used to back Saudi Arabia?s agenda in Syria. This is a fact, regardless of intent, that is not lost on most (excluding John Kerry). What is not known by many is that U.S. forces may soon be training al-Qaeda-linked Islamic radicals for the purpose of waging better war against current Syrian government.

Via AOL.

The Obama administration is considering a plan to use U.S. military trainers to help increase the capabilities of the Syrian rebels, in a move that would greatly expand the current CIA training being done quietly in Jordan, U.S. officials told The Associated Press on Thursday.

Any training would take place outside Syria, and one possible location would be Jordan.

The officials said no decision had been made, but that discussions were going on at high levels of the government. It comes as the Obama administration prods Congress to authorize limited military strikes against Syrian President Bashar Assad?s government in retaliation for a deadly Aug. 21 chemical weapons attack.

This isn?t just about smacking the hand of a dictator. This is about full on regime change, placing terrorists in charge of a nation that sits just north of Israel.

FHF-CPA Blog: Charitable Giving: Which Americans Are the Most ...

Charitable giving is growing at a healthy pace,?a sign that Americans are a little more confident about the economy and their own finances.

Individuals, corporations and foundations donated $316.2 billion to charitable causes in 2012, a 3.5 percent increase over 2011, according to the annual?Giving USA?study, which is conducted by the Giving USA Foundation and Indiana University Lilly Family School of Philanthropy.

Ten Important Facts about
Charitable Tax Deductions

Charitable contributions are deductible only if you itemize on your tax return.
To be deductible, charitable contributions must be made to "qualified" organizations. Giving money to an individual is never deductible. To determine if an organization qualifies as a charitable organization, go to the IRS?Exempt Organizations Select Check.
To deduct a charitable donation of money, regardless of the amount, you must have a bank record or a written document from the charity showing its name, the date and amount of the contribution. Bank records include canceled checks, bank or credit union statements, and credit card statements. These statements should show the name of the charity, the date, and the amount paid. Credit card statements should also show the transaction posting date.
For a gift of $250 or more (cash or property), you must obtain and keep in your records a contemporaneous written acknowledgment from the qualified organization indicating the amount of cash?or a description of property contributed. The acknowledgment must state whether the organization provided goods or services in exchange for the gift. If so, the organization must provide a description and a good faith estimate of the value of the goods or services. One document from an organization can satisfy both the written communication requirement for monetary gifts and the contemporaneous written acknowledgment requirement for all contributions of $250 or more.
To be deductible, clothing and household items donated to charity generally must be in good used condition or better. Household items include furniture, electronics, appliances and linens.
A clothing or household item for which a taxpayer claims a deduction of more than $500 doesn't have to meet the standard described above if?you include a qualified appraisal with the return.
If a contribution entitles you to merchandise, goods, or services, including admission to a charity ball, banquet, theatrical performance, or sporting event, you can deduct only the amount that exceeds the fair market value of the benefit received.
If your deduction for a non-cash contribution is more than $500, IRS Form 8283 must be filled out and attached it to your return. If you claim a deduction for a contribution of non-cash property worth more than $5,000, you need a qualified appraisal. If you claim a deduction for a contribution of non-cash property worth more than $500,000, you?must attach the qualified appraisal to your return.
The deduction for a motor vehicle, boat or airplane donated to charity is usually limited to the gross proceeds from its sale. This rule applies if the claimed value is more than $500. IRS Form 1098-C or a similar statement, must be provided to the donor by the organization and attached to the donor's tax return.
Contributions are deductible in the year made. So donations charged to a credit card before the end of 2013 count for 2013. This is true even if the credit card bill isn't paid until 2014. Also, checks count for 2013 as long as they're mailed in 2013.
Questions about charitable contributions? Consult with your tax adviser.

A Partial Recovery

As encouraging as those numbers are, charitable giving was still below the level it reached before the 2008 financial crisis -- $344.5 billion in 2007 -- and is not likely to get back there for six or seven years at its current growth rate, said Patrick M. Rooney, Associate Dean for Academic Affairs and Research at the Indiana University Lilly Family School of Philanthropy.

"Individual giving rose 1.9 percent after inflation, perhaps reflecting the fact that the average household is still struggling in some areas," Rooney said in the university's report on the study, which has been conducted every year since 1955.

Another dark cloud hovering over charitable giving is that the Obama administration and some members of Congress want to limit or eliminate the federal tax deduction for it.

The Chronicle of Philanthropy,?quoting "non-profit advocates," stated that limiting the charitable giving tax deduction to 28 percent, as the White House has again proposed, would reduce giving by as much as $9 billion per year.

Sources of Charitable Contributions

Individuals gave $228.9 billion in 2012 -- more than all other philanthropic entities combined. Private foundations gave the second largest amount in 2012. Foundations donated $45.7 billion last year, a 4.4 percent increase over 2011.

The next most generous group comprised the recently departed who had bequeathed money to charities in their wills. Although such bequests fell by 7 percent in 2012, they still added up to $23.4 billion.

Then came corporations, whose charitable giving rose 12.2 percent last year to $18.2 billion. That amount included donations by the corporations and their foundations. They gave cash, in-kind donations and grants. The large annual increase in corporate giving is due in large part to corporations giving about $131 million to not-for-profit organizations working on Hurricane Sandy relief.

"Corporations represent a vital portion of our country's total charitable giving," said Gregg Carlson, chairman of the Giving USA Foundation. "And while their donations increased last year, corporate philanthropy represents only 6 percent of total giving."

Recipients of the Generosity

Among beneficiaries of all this generosity, the most blessed, if you will, were religious entities, according to the?Giving USA?study.?They took in about $101.5 billion in 2012, slightly less than in 2011.

Educational institutions?received $41.3 billion in contributions last year, an increase of 7 percent over 2011. The majority of these donations went to colleges and universities.

Human services giving, such as for disaster relief, amounted to $40.4 billion last year, a 3.8 percent increase over 2011. Total?contributions for Hurricane Sandy relief were $223 million.

And giving to foundations amounted to $30.6 billion. That was down by 4.6 percent from 2011. "Estimated contributions to foundations can change dramatically from year to year, depending upon very large gifts received from the wealthiest donors in America," stated theGiving USA?study.

"The $316 billion in total giving reflected by our 2012 data continues the positive twin trajectory of dollars coupled with hope," Carlson said. "I would say the outlook is positive for those who believe in and understand the power of American philanthropy."

A Closer Look at Demographics

Blackbaud, a software and service provider for not-for-profit organizations, commissioned a recent survey to identify charitable trends for various age groups. The survey discovered that Baby Boomers are the most generous.

People between 49 and 67 years old account for 43 percent of charitable giving and each one gives about $1,200 per year, the survey found. It said 63 percent of Baby Boomers donated clothing and other goods to charities, 52 percent gave to local social service providers and 46 percent gave to places of worship.

Americans age 68 and older give about $1,370 per year -- more per capita than Baby Boomers do. However, their total annual contributions are?less than that of the Baby Boomers, because there are fewer of them. About 72 percent of "Matures," as Blackbaud refers to them, donate goods, 55 percent to local social service providers and 50 percent to places of worship. Older people are more likely than others to donate their time. About 42 percent of them volunteer.

Generation X, consisting of people between ages 33 and 48, give an average of $732 per year. Forty percent of them?donate to places of worship, 39 percent to health charities and 37 percent to social service agencies. Fifty-six percent of Generation Xers give goods to charity.

Finally, the survey looked at Generation Y. This cohort, consisting of people between ages 18 and 32, gave an average of $481 per year to 3.3 charities. They prefer charities oriented toward children and healthcare. They also demand the most accountability from nonprofits. Sixty percent of Gen Y want to see the direct impact of their donations.

Technology Trends

Not surprisingly, Gen Yers are the most likely of all age groups to give via a mobile phone and share information about their preferred charities on social media, according to the Blackbaud survey. They were also the most apt to view online videos about charities and follow beneficiaries on social media. Gen Xers were close behind in these trends, however.

The Blackbaud survey also looked at whether different age groups use mobile phones as their primary phone. Almost all Gen Yers do (98 percent), compared with 86 percent of Gen Xers, 60 percent of Baby Boomers and 30 percent of Matures.

Here are a couple more tech findings from the survey:

?Who Banks Online?Who Is on Facebook?

Gen Y

80 percent90 percent

Gen X

78 percent77 percent

Baby Boomers

72 percent71 percent

Tips for Charities

Here are a couple considerations from Blackbaud for not-for-profits hoping to most effectively reach today's donors:

Direct mail isn't dead.?For example, 52 percent of Matures and 40 percent of Baby Boomers gave in response to a direct mail solicitation. It is not the vehicle of choice for younger givers, however. So not-for-profit organizations need to cultivate other channels, such as Internet video and Facebook. While you might expect that 97 percent of 18-to-32 year olds watch YouTube videos, you may be surprised to find that 58 percent of those age 68 and older do, too.

Take a multi-channel approach.?Targeting different generations through the Internet, social media, direct mail and other channels will maximize potential gifts.

Kerry: US Ground Troops Could be Used in Syria

Stephen Dinan
Washington Times
September 3, 2013

Comment: As we reported earlier, Obama?s congressional resolution would allow not only boots on the ground, but an open ended war throughout the region.

Secretary of State John F. Kerry refused Tuesday to rule out putting U.S. troops on the ground in Syria, saying the president needs to retain the ability to send in forces in very select circumstances as the Obama administration officially began to make its case for retaliatory military strikes on the Assad regime.

Testifying to the Senate, Mr. Kerry accused critics of ?armchair isolationism? and said there are risks to acting, but that the risks of inaction are even worse. But asked whether President Obama would accept an authorization from Congress that specifically banned putting U.S. troops on the ground in Syria, the secretary balked.

?I don?t want to take off the table an option that might or might not be available to the president that might secure our country,? he said, pointing to a hypothetical situation in which the U.S. would want troops to go in to secure a chemical weapons cache from falling into the hands of terrorists.

Moments later, however, realizing his statement could be a problem, Mr. Kerry sought to clarify. He said that Mr. Obama will accept whatever restrictions Congress wants to place to make sure that the U.S. doesn?t get drawn into the actual fight between the regime and the rebels.

Full story here.

Microsoft Purchases Nokia's Device and Services Division to Unite Windows Phone Hardware and Software

Microsoft and Nokia today announced that Microsoft will acquire Nokia's Devices and Services unit, allowing Microsoft to unite its Windows Phone software efforts with its primary hardware partner in Nokia. The deal also includes a licensing agreement to provide Microsoft with access to Nokia's mapping services and patents.
Building on the partnership with Nokia announced in February 2011 and the increasing success of Nokia?s Lumia smartphones, Microsoft aims to accelerate the growth of its share and profit in mobile devices through faster innovation, increased synergies, and unified branding and marketing. For Nokia, this transaction is expected to be significantly accretive to earnings, strengthen its financial position, and provide a solid basis for future investment in its continuing businesses.

?It?s a bold step into the future ? a win-win for employees, shareholders and consumers of both companies. Bringing these great teams together will accelerate Microsoft?s share and profits in phones, and strengthen the overall opportunities for both Microsoft and our partners across our entire family of devices and services,? said Steve Ballmer, Microsoft chief executive officer. ?In addition to their innovation and strength in phones at all price points, Nokia brings proven capability and talent in critical areas such as hardware design and engineering, supply chain and manufacturing management, and hardware sales, marketing and distribution.?

microsoft_nokia
The deal will see 32,000 Nokia employees transfer to Microsoft, with Microsoft also acquiring the Lumia and Asha brands while licensing the Nokia brand for continuity with current Nokia-branded hardware. Microsoft will also acquire Nokia's long-term license with Qualcomm for chip technology.

Microsoft and Nokia have seen some success with Lumia phones running Windows Phone, but the platform remains well short of becoming a third major player in the smartphone market alongside Google's Android and Apple's iOS. By uniting the hardware and software, Microsoft seems intent upon offering a more complete and end-to-end user experience, similar in some ways to Apple's work integration of iOS and iPhone.

Novel topological crystalline insulator shows mass appeal

[unable to retrieve full-text content]Physicists have theorized that topological crystalline insulators possess unique surface states as a result of crystalline symmetry. An international team of researchers has confirmed that experimental signature and revealed that disrupting the lattice-like structure imparts mass upon previously mass-less electrons. Furthermore, the researchers found manipulating structural symmetry offers a degree of control over the electronic phases of the solid-state material.

Samsung 'Galaxy Gear' may ignite smartwatch wars next week

Samsung

kipris

Samsung / Korean Intellectual Property Office

One design patent shows a long screen and segmented band.

The next year or two will be a battleground for the new device everyone's talking about, even if no one is sure they want one: the smartwatch. And Samsung is hoping to get a jump on the competition by releasing its Galaxy Gear watch early ? reportedly, as soon as next week.

Apple, which is expected to announce new iPhones Sept. 10, could also introduce its own smartwatch then, and Samsung's launch could be considered a tactical move to get its foot in the door before Apple steals the show.

Information about the Gear has been leaking out for weeks in bits and pieces. The Android-powered watch will have an AMOLED display, slightly curved to better fit your wrist. But nobody seems quite sure about the size and shape.

Design patents filed in Korea (originally spotted by the blog SamMobile) show a futuristic look and elongated screen, but they may not reflect the shipping product. Samsung has admitted it has been working on the watch for a long time, so several versions may have been patented, and some may not be quite ready for release; one rumored model with a flexible display, for example, may have to wait until the technology is ready for mass deployment.

Kipris 2

Samsung / Korean Intellectual Property Office

Another patent shows a more rounded design.

As for functionality, the Gear is reportedly not a "watchphone," i.e. a complete smartphone device, SIM card and all, packed into a watch-sized package. Instead, it would be more of a smartphone companion, like the highly hyped (but somewhat limited) Pebble smartwatch, putting notifications, tweets, and texts on your wrist.

An unnamed source told GigaOm, however, that the device will also have a microphone, speaker, and even a tiny camera. It's shaping up to be the gadget people have been dreaming of since Dick Tracy's "two-way wrist radio," a familiar reference for over half a century.

If Samsung's ultra-smart Galaxy S4 is any indication, the Gear will be packed with neat little features and will almost certainly integrate deeply with the company's smartphone ecosystem: Special apps, accessories, and abilities exclusive to those willing to go all-Samsung with their gadget menagerie.

The launch is?rumored for Sept. 4; with Apple's event scheduled for just a week after that, it may not be much of a lead, but firing the first shot in this high-tech battle could give Samsung an edge.

Exploring Tarak

This is the General OOC topic for the roleplay Exploring Tarak.

Here, players are welcome to ask any and all questions about the world of Tarak, or continue OOC discussions that may have picked up during the roleplay.

This is also a good location to discuss suggestions for locations, proposed characters, etc. While this is a fledgling roleplay, the world has long been in the making and is actually the world I am utilizing for my novel in progress. There is a long history and an intense plot already in place for the novel that I hope to get into in the roleplays.

For me, this roleplay is a tool to help me further flesh out the details of this world and my characters. Some of the characters you interact with here may be characters in my novel.

As a disclaimer: I will not use any of your characters in my book, as I plan to have it published. Neither will I reveal the entire story, as such would be counterproductive to my publishing efforts.

May you rise up to meet the road before you, at times tortuous, volatile and grueling;
May you embrace the tempestuous elements that bear down upon you,
Until the sun shines warm upon your face.

What I've Learned About Weight Loss From Decades In The Fitness ...

A few decades in the fitness industry has given me a lot of time to focus on health and physiques, my own in particular.?

I've tried a wide variety of workouts and diets. I've been a dancer, an aerobics instructor, a dedicated gym rat and a yoga instructor.?I've gone vegan, vegetarian, macrobiotic, spent time in the Zone, and thrown it all out to eat whatever I felt like eating.?

Along the way, I've had periods when I felt strong and healthy and others when I've felt worn-out, lacked joy, and been above my ideal weight.?

One thing I know to be true is that to achieve the health and wellness you want, you only need to learn one lesson:?

Nothing outside stops you. You stop you.

This is a challenging perspective to live with. If we blame the cookie for our weight gain, our jobs for preventing us from exercising, or our relationships for our unhappiness?we don't need to look too deeply into ourselves and our choices.?

When we find ourselves feeling depleted, catching colds easily, or gaining unwanted weight, it's often because we're making lifestyle choices that are not aligned with our best interests.?

Our bodies are a reflection of what's happening in our heads.?

Shopping for fresh food, cooking healthy meals, and exercising all require substantial time and thought. However, tearing open a bag of processed carbs, or sitting on the couch doesn't take much effort at all.?

When our thoughts and feelings have tanked our sense of self value, we're no longer inclined to put forth the effort required to maintain our health.?

The obstacle is not that we don't have the knowledge, access, or ability to take care of ourselves, it's that we don't feel worthy of the effort.?

This mindset also shows up in our approach toward self medicating. At the end of a particularly challenging day, do you tell yourself you deserve to take a yoga class? Or do you "deserve" a cocktail??

Of course, we deserve to feel better when we're under stress. We deserve to give ourselves what's best for us.?We don't deserve a toxic shortcut.?

We know this. But choices get tricky if our self esteem is in the gutter. In these times, making a commitment to our health can take a gargantuan effort that's almost impossible to sustain long-term.?

When we feel good about ourselves and believe we're worth our own effort, leading a healthy lifestyle becomes much easier.?

It's not the junk food, challenging circumstances, or difficult people in our world that prevent us from obtaining our wellness goals. It's our inside world that steers our choices, our actions, and our reactions. Accepting this truth is like pulling a band-aid off in one jerk. It's startling and it feels a bit raw, but healing what's underneath is where the progress is. ?

Israel military blog apologises after using Suria KLCC photo, calling it ?lavish Gaza mall?

August 16, 2013
Latest Update: August 16, 2013 07:35 pm

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) apologised today for putting up a photograph of Malaysia's Suria KLCC and captioning it as a "lavish Gaza mall" in the IDF blog.

Israeli news portal Haaretz reported that the IDF spokesperson had apologised on its Twitter account for the caption and photograph, saying it was ?a mistake made in good conscience".

This was after another online media outlet, Electronic Intifada, had revealed that the mall is actually Suria KLCC located in the Petronas Twin Towers in Kuala Lumpur.

The blog, akin to a tourism brochure, had been started to counter claims that Gaza, once a hostile strip in the nation, is facing a humanitarian crisis.

It was reported that when the mistake was revealed, the picture was taken down, adding that it was important to note, however, that "the post contained 17 accurate pictures which properly reflected the subject in question". - August 16, 2013.A partial screenshot of the story on the Haaretz website today. Population Distribution GIF - Business Insider

For your morning enjoyment, here's a delightful way to view the change, over time, of the US population, in terms of the relative size of various age groups.

It goes all the way from 1900 to 2060, and you can nicely observe phenomenons like the baby bust, the baby boom, the current retirement boom, and the future periods when the boomers will die off.

It was put together by the brilliant Calculated Risk.
