13 New York City schools have launched a pilot birth control program that allows teens to receive the Plan B pill. The program began last year and may be expanding citywide. Parents have the option to ?opt out? of the program, by signing a form that is sent home with students. However, the city?s Board of Health states only 2% of parents have chosen to have their child not participate in the program. Without signing the waiver, teens can obtain various forms of birth control, including ?the morning after pill?, and other oral contraceptives, condoms, and injections.
When the program first launched, over 500 teenage girls ages 14 to 18 out of the 12,000 female students in attendance at the test schools were given the pill that prevents pregnancy up to 72 hours after having unprotected sex. The program?s first year only included 5 schools, and this year it has increased to 13.
Executive Director of the National Association of School Nurses (NASN), Donna Mazyck, says she has yet to come across another program like this. The program is called Connecting Adolescents To Comprehensive Health, or CATCH, and attempts to reduce teen pregnancy rates, a common reason many teen girls drop out of school. However, many parents believe programs like this encourage unsafe sex rather than protect teens from unplanned pregnancies.
Students have had access to condoms at many schools, but now types of birth control available without parental consent (with the exception of the opt out form) include Depo-Provera shots, birth control pills, and now Plan B.

When the Waldo Canyon Fire erupted, long-time Colorado Springs resident Carol Lyn Lucas had no idea her home of 22 years would soon be gone, one of 346 houses erased from existence.
"To have it wiped out in an afternoon is unfathomable," explains Lucas, who saw the flames cresting over the mountain towards her home as she fled in a whirl of emotion and adrenaline. "We were running in a panic, my son was yelling, 'Oh, my god! Oh, my god!"
With only a few possessions that she was able to quickly gather before being evacuated, the mother of three left behind life as she formerly knew it. "Every inch of that house was a loving space I created for my family," she says. Family heirlooms, antiques, photographs from her 30-year marriage - gone in an instant, never to be replaced. "It's surreal. Everything that represented my security and stability is totally wiped out of my life."
Yet, while Lucas may have lost her house, she has gained a newfound respect for a community that she's called home for so long. In the wake of losing her house, she's found strength and renewal in the kindness of friends and strangers, along with a fresh perspective from being on the receiving end of charity.
"I feel like a nomad now," Lucas says. "I've cried my eyes out, but the one thing I want to stress is the incredible support of the community." Within days, her friends had joined together to lend a hand, collecting clothing and donations to present to Lucas and another player in their Life Time Fitness tennis group who'd also lost her home.
Kelly Solomito initially got the ball rolling. "I started sending emails out to a lot of the women we play tennis with," says Solomito. After learning the two members of the tennis group had lost their homes along with most of their clothing, she asked for clothing and cash donations to buy gift cards for the victims. Explains Solomito, "I thought it might be uplifting to them to have the support of the group and to help them buy things they needed immediately."
A week and a half later, the tennis group presented Lucas and fellow victim, Marthe Schwartz, gift certificates for $2,000 each at a 60-lady-strong luncheon at a local Mimi's Cafe. "Mimi's was wonderful. They put out a special menu for us and bought the two fire victims their meals," says Solomito, "Since then, I've had another $1,000 come in, so they'll each be getting another $500." Lucas says she was totally surprised at the group's generosity because some of the women she'd only played tennis with once, but it was just one of the many unexpected blessings she's received.
Besides the tennis group's help, other organizations have helped ease the pain in a myriad of ways.
"Mountain Chalet gave away running shoes and clothes two weeks ago and I went over there and got a pair of shoes and I just started crying. I was always on the other side of giving and now someone gives me a pair of shoes," says Lucas, who experienced a similar feeling while waiting with other victims for food staples at Care and Share Food Bank. "I just couldn't believe I was in a line like that. I've never experienced that in my life," says Lucas.
According to Shannon Coker, community relations director of Care and Share, the organization has helped many people who're still in shock that they are now on the receiving end of disaster relief. "These folks are in a position where maybe they've never been in, where they're accepting resources from an organization," explains Coker. "We try to explain to everyone, this is what the community wants you to have."
It's not just the local community that's pitched in. A two-week disaster relief food drive yielded an astounding 1.6 million pounds of food, some of it sent in from places as far away as Appalachian State University in North Carolina via boxes filled with non-perishable food and toiletries. "To put it into perspective," says Coker, "Care and Share food drives typically yield about 400,000 pounds of food in a calendar year. This has far exceeded anything we've ever dreamt of."
The day after the fire was at its most ferocious, Care and Share had a mile-long stretch of people standing in front of the facility waiting patiently to donate resources to those affected. It wasn't just individuals either. Coker recently had a company present a $20,000 check from a company that had matched their nationwide employee donations after one of their local workers lost a home in the fire. "They wanted to do something as an organization to help," Coker says.
"Care and Share is part of a leadership committee that has been formed representing a bunch of nonprofits in town that are committed to the long-term recovery for some of these folks who are permanently displaced," explains Coker. "We're here to still help people."
The fire also sparked the idea for Wildfire Tees, colorful t-shirts with inspiring slogans designed to raise money for relief. Local marketer Tucker Wannamaker helped coordinate their efforts in a campaign that went viral overnight. Through the reach of social media, Wildfire Tees has sold over 550,000 shirts to people from around the world. So far, they've written two checks for $67,000 each to Care and Share and a Colorado Red Cross chapter. "It's another avenue for people to help," emphasizes Wannamaker. "People want to be a part of this outside of just staring at the news and seeing Colorado burn."
For the minds behind Wildfire Tees, they're looking forward to the bulk of their next check going towards the state fund for long-term wildfire relief efforts, with additional monies set aside for the more immediate needs of businesses and individuals directly affected by the fire.
"We absolutely want to continue this," says Wannamaker, who says their goal is transitioning into a disaster t-shirt relief organization. "It was great to give a whole bunch of money away. That felt great."
While Lucas and her family have a long road towards healing after the harrowing ordeal of losing their safe haven, she realizes without the support of the community her travails would be far greater. Says Lucas, "This community has been unbelievably supportive and kind."
Living well is not measured by the size of our home or bank account, but by the lives we touch, the impact we have on family and friends and what we accomplish with the talents and resources we have been blessed with. In the face of devastation, the people of Colorado Springs have come together to ease suffering and loss.

PRATTVILLE, Ala. (AP) ? Third-ranked Stacy Lewis shot a 7-under 65 on Saturday to take a two-stroke lead in the Navistar LPGA Classic, while second-round leader Lexi Thompson fell five shots behind.
Lewis, a two-time winner this season, had a 15-under 201 total on The Senator course at the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail's Capitol Hill complex. She birdied four of the first five holes in her bogey-free round.
The 17-year-old Thompson had a 74 to drop into a tie for sixth at 10 under. Thompson won the event last year at 16 to become the youngest champion in LPGA Tour history, a mark broken last month by 15-year-old amateur Lydia Ko in the Canadian Women's Open.
Angela Stanford was second after a 68. Lizette Salas with third at 12 under after a 70, and Haeji Kang and Mi Jung Hur followed at 11 under. Kang shot a 67, and Hur had a 72. Sarah Jane Smith and Hee Young Park joined Thompson at 10 under. Smith had a 68, and Park shot 72.
Dyslexia may result from impairment of a different linguistic system than previously thought, according to research published Sep. 19 in the open access journalPLOS ONE.
Speech perception engages at least two linguistic systems: the phonetic system, which extracts discrete sound units from acoustic input, and the phonological system, which combines these units to form individual words. Previously, researchers generally believed that dyslexia was caused by phonological impairment, but results from the current study, led by Iris Berent of Northeastern University in Boston, suggest that the phonetic system may actually be the cause.
"Our findings confirm that dyslexia indeed compromises the language system, but the locus of the deficit is in the phonetic, not the phonological system, as had been previously assumed", says Berent.
In the study, Hebrew-speaking college students had difficulty discriminating between similar speech sounds, but had no problem tracking abstract phonological patterns, even for novel words, suggesting that the phonological system is intact but the phonetic system is compromised.
"Our research demonstrates that a closer analysis of the language system can radically alter our understanding of the disorder, and ultimately, its treatment," says Berent.

When I left my corporate job last October to pursue a career in freelance writing, I told myself I was doing it for my family. I believed it too; spending 2? hours a day with my kids rushing through homework, dinner, and baths hardly felt like the way motherhood was supposed to be.
Once I made the transition home, I got itchy; itchy to do more. I started taking on more and more (and more) freelance work until I was working around the clock. Sure, I was home with my kids but ?being there? without actually being there was not only confusing for my kids, but agonizingly heavy on my heart. I worked evenings, weekends, holidays, and birthdays. I worked when family was in town, while the rest of the family was sleeping, and while my husband took the kids to the park. I missed BooBoo?s 2 seconds of glory riding a bike for the first time without training wheels, and why? Because I was working.
Listen, I?m no stranger to missing firsts. I raised two kids through infant daycare. I?ve missed first words, first steps, and first potties in the toilet. When I made the decision to pull my kids out of daycare and try my hand at earning a living from home, I never expected the cycle to continue. But it did, because perhaps even more than my desire to be home with my kids was my desire to prove to myself that I had the chops to make a living as a writer. Opportunities and a steady paycheck validated my talents in an addictive way and I loved it. What I didn?t love was what happened next?[read more]

Remember the Sony HMZ-T2 3D head-mounted display that we tried on back at IFA? Well, it's being prominently featured here at TGS, too. Tucked away at a smaller, much more modest booth around the corner, however, is something a smidge more interesting. Kept behind glass and a safe distance away from our grubby mitts and sweaty foreheads resides the "Prototype-SR" (Substitutional Reality) that was outed on YouTube last week. Essentially, the unit appears to be the HMZ-T2 with a front-mounted camera for head tracking and camera functionality -- the sort of thing that will provide what's being called a 360-degree immersive entertainment experience. From what we can tell from the booth monitors, the unit displays 3D video overlaid in real space for the person wearing the device. Details are scarce and extremely limited demos were available in an apparent lottery (no luck here). You can rest assured that if we're able to snag one, though, we'll be sure to offer up some impressions. For now, take a look at the camera-wielding set of hi-tech goggles in the gallery below and the aforementioned video awaits just past the break.

10 year-old Torin has just passed his three year anniversary since he was diagnosed with a high grade malignant brain tumor
Last year, we told you about seven year-old Savannah?s quest to raise money for pediatric brain research on behalf of her friend, Torin, who had been diagnosed with a high grade malignant brain tumor. Savannah and her mom, Margie, took part in the 2011 Run for Hope 3k walk and, with the help from friends, family, and neighbors, she raised $1,900 in donations (her goal was $1,000!).
This year, Savannah and Margie are once again taking part in the 3k walk during the?Run of Hope Seattle 2012?at Seward Park. Margie tells us that last week, 10-year-old Torin just passed his 3 year anniversary since diagnosis. ?I still cannot imagine what it had to be like to find out your 7-year-old has cancer,? she adds. ?He continues to have his ups and downs?but never fails to amaze everyone around him with his spirit, optimism and sense of humor.?
On her?team page, Savannah writes:
My mom and I are part of ?Team Torin? in the 2012 Run of Hope. Torin is my friend I know through Kung Fu. He is funny, always wants to play, and he has a great smile. Torin was diagnosed with a high grade diffuse PNET tumor on September 9, 2009 when he was seven years old.
Torin is now 10 and is half-cured of brain cancer. But we want to make him cured. The Run of Hope helps other people with brain cancer get cured hopefully, too. The money goes to pediatric brain tumor research at Seattle Children?s Hospital
So far, Savannah has raised $228 dollars and she hopes to meet her $2,000 goal before the walk on September 30. Donations go directly to Children?s Hospital.?If you?re interested in donating, there are 3 ways you can help:

NASA?will award a total of $2.7 million to eight advanced robotics projects, in an effort to push forward the frontiers of space exploration, agency officials announced.
The projects?range from efforts to improve planetary rovers to new technologies for humanoid robotics systems. The new endeavors, named Sept. 14, ?should aid the development and use of robots both in space and on factory floors in the United States, NASA officials said.
"Selected through our participation in the National Robotics Initiative, these new projects will support NASA as we plan for our asteroid mission in 2025 and the human exploration of Mars around 2035," NASA chief technologist Mason Peck said in a statement.
The winning proposals, which will receive awards ranging from $150,000 to $1 million, are:
"Toward Human Avatar Robots for Co-Exploration of Hazardous Environments," J. Pratt, principal investigator, Florida Institute of Human Machine Cognition, Pensacola.
?"A Novel Powered Leg Prosthesis Simulator for Sensing and Control Development," H. Herr, principal investigator, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Cambridge.
"Long-range Prediction of Non-Geometric Terrain Hazards for Reliable Planetary Rover Traverse," R. Whittaker, principal investigator, Carnegie Mellon University, Pittsburgh.
"Active Skins for Simplified Tactile Feedback in Robotics," S. Bergbreiter, principal investigator, University of Maryland, College Park.
"Actuators for Safe, Strong and Efficient Humanoid Robots," S. Pekarek, principal investigator, Purdue University, West Lafayette, Indiana.
"Whole-body Telemanipulation of the Dreamer Humanoid Robot on Rough Terrains Using Hand Exoskeleton (EXODREAM)," L. Sentis, principal investigator, University of Texas at Austin.
?"Long, Thin Continuum Robots for Space Applications," I. Walker, principal investigator, Clemson University, Clemson, South Carolina.
"Manipulating Flexible Materials Using Sparse Coding," R. Platt, principal investigator, State University of New York, Buffalo.
Advanced robotics systems are crucial to NASA, as unmanned robots like the recently landed Mars rover Curiosity are the agency's off-planet exploration workhorses. And NASA is actively developing robots that will work alongside humans in space and tackle dangerous or mundane jobs. [Complete Coverage: Mars Rover Curiosity]
For example, NASA delivered a $2.5 million humanoid robot called Robonaut 2 to the International Space Station in February 2011. Robonaut 2, which was developed via a partnership with carmaker General Motors, is designed to be an autonomous assistant to astronauts aboard the orbiting lab, helping out with complex chores to keep everything running smoothly.
The U.S. National Science Foundation managed the solicitation and peer review selection process for the newly announced awards.
Under the National Robotics Initiative, NSF, NASA, the National Institutes of Health and the Department of Agriculture are working together to help engage and train the next generation of American roboticists, NASA officials said.

More fun from Leica here at Photokina in Germany -- and this guy is big in every way. It's the S-System, the company's update to its pro-series medium format offering. The successor to the S2 is quite large (even in SLR terms) and is very, very heavy. In fact, you're going to want to work out that upper body before using this thing for any period of time -- that is, once you're done selling your first born child. Aesthetically, the camera looks a good deal like the S2, maintaining its nice looking design with a couple of key differences -- for one thing, there's an extra bump on the top of the camera -- this is where the integrated GPS lives.
The 3-inch LCD (which is capable of 16 million colors) is also covered with Gorilla Glass, so you're less likely to crack it if you're rough on the thing (though, again, at these prices, we assume you'll be nicer to it than your own offspring). Look inside the optical viewfinder and you'll get a meter that helps you determine how you're oriented respective to the horizon. The sensor, naturally, has been refreshed as well, now measuring 30 by 44mm, with 37.5 megapixels. And the shutter can do its thing as quickly as 1/1,000 of a second.
As for pricing, well -- the Leica rep we spoke with put the camera at (get ready) €19,600. The camera is also launching with four lenses, in case you have a few other kids you're interested in selling.

KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) ? The Taliban claimed responsibility on Saturday for an attack against a sprawling British base in southern Afghanistan that killed two U.S. Marines and wounded several other troops, saying it was to avenge an anti-Islamic film which insulted the Prophet Muhammad and also because Britain's Prince Harry is serving there.
The U.S.-led NATO coalition said in a statement that the overnight attack focused on Camp Bastion, a huge British base adjacent to Camp Leatherneck which houses U.S. Marine operations in southern Helmand province.
"We attacked that base because Prince Harry was also on it and so they can know our anger," Taliban spokesman Qari Youssef Ahmadi said by telephone. He added, "Thousands more suicide attackers are ready to give up their lives for the sake of the Prophet."
Prince Harry, third in line to the British throne, is based at Camp Bastion. A spokesperson for Britain's Ministry of Defense told The Associated Press that he was unharmed in the attack, which according to Britain's Press Association took place two kilometers (one mile) from the section of the complex where the prince was located. The official spoke on condition of anonymity in line with government policy.
Capt. Harry Wales, as the prince is known in the military, is serving a four-month combat deployment as a gunner on an Apache helicopter. Harry, who turns 28 on Saturday, is expected to start flying Apache missions this week. This is his second tour in Afghanistan.
In its statement, the International Security Assistance Force, NATO's Afghan mission, said that insurgents attacked "with both small arms fire and indirect fire killing two ISAF service members and causing damage to buildings and aircraft on the flight line. Currently, ISAF forces are in the process of assessing the extent of the damage." Indirect fire usually refers to mortars or rockets.
No details were provided on the dead and wounded, but U.S. officials said in Washington that two Marines were killed in the attack.
Lt. Col. Stewart Upton, a spokesman at Camp Leatherneck, and Daoud Ahmadi, a spokesman for Helmand's governor, said 16 Taliban fighters were also killed.
It was unclear what the insurgents hoped to accomplish in attacking Camp Bastion, one of the largest and most heavily defended military facilities in Afghanistan.
Bastion is located in a remote desert area northwest of Lashkar Gah, the capital of Helmand. It is the hub for all British operations in Helmand and along with Leatherneck houses thousands of combat troops and Marines, including Danish and Estonian forces.
Afghanistan's southern region has been a hotbed of the insurgency and attacks against foreign forces occur daily, although the Taliban have largely been routed in its capital and larger towns. Helmand remains an active battlefield between insurgents and NATO forces and for years has been the site of some of the war's bloodiest engagements.
There were few protests against the film in Afghanistan on Friday and Saturday. The largest involved a few hundred people in the eastern city of Jalalabad.
The Afghan government has indefinitely blocked YouTube to prevent Afghans from viewing a video clip of the film that was posted on the internet site, said Khair Mohammad Faizi, a spokesman for communication ministry. He said it will remain blocked until the video is taken down.
Other Google services, including gmail, were also blocked in Afghanistan on Friday and Saturday. Faizi did not comment on this.
