US Cellular intros first LTE devices: the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 4G and Galaxy S Aviator 4G
US Cellular's had its LTE network in the oven for quite some time, and we knew it was going to be showing up sometime next month. The missing part of the equation, however, was which devices would ring in the celebration. The carrier finally answered the mystery question: the first tablet, the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 4G, will be the inaugural device and is expected to arrive in March, while the Galaxy S Aviator 4G should be gracing store shelves sometime in April.

We don't expect to see any surprises with the Galaxy Tab, but the Aviator definitely has us curious. At first glance, it appears to be the same design as the Droid Charge, and will offer a 4.3-inch WVGA Super AMOLED Plus display, run on Android 2.3.6 and come with a 8MP rear camera, front-facing cam and HDMI port. We're hoping to get more specs for your enjoyment, but enjoy the press release in the meantime.

Pentax confirms the rumors, mirrorless K-01 coming March 2012 (video)

We heard it was coming, and confirmation arrivies today of Pentax's latest model. the K-01. The manufacturer is cheer-leading the fact that it uses the world's thinnest interchangeable lens for lens-interchangeable cameras, which really rolls off the tongue. The body is compatible with the rest of your K-series lens, although they're presumably going to look awkwardly thick in comparison. The 40mm lens can cope with aperture settings down to f/1.8, while the camera packs a new 16.28 megapixel CMOS sensor, with an ISO range of 100 to 25,600. Video chops have also been improved; a new recording button for instant start and a stereo mic differentiate it from the K-5. Video capture can be done at 1080p with 30, 25 or 24fps settings available. The aluminum-bodied camera will arrive in yellow, black and white next month, priced at $750 for the high-design body or $900 with the DA 40mm lens included. The lens will also be available, priced at $250. You can see designer Marc Newson emote about his latest creation in the video right after the break

Illinois beats No. 9 Michigan State 42-41 (AP)

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. ? In a game in which neither team made even one-third of its shots, it seemed right the deciding free throws would be followed by a few more misses.

Brandon Paul made two foul shots that gave Illinois the lead with 45 seconds to play, then missed the front end of two 1-and-1s in the Illini's 42-41 win over No. 9 Michigan State on Tuesday night.

The shooting ? 32.6 percent for Illinois and 24.1 percent for Michigan State ? was so bad that players suggested the ball may have had too much air in it.

"Someone brought it up to the refs, I think one of the coaches," Paul said. "I'm not trying to make excuses. I missed those free throws, I shouldn't be missing those shots."

The win ended a three-game losing streak for the Illini (16-6, 5-4 Big Ten), a run that left coach Bruce Weber resorting to prayer.

"When the shots go up, I just say, `Please, God, let it go in,'" Weber said. "Some of the shots just sat in there and then popped out."

The loss cost the Spartans (17-5, 6-3) a chance to move into first place in the Big Ten with No. 3 Ohio State.

Spartans forward Draymond Green spent much of the game on the bench with foul trouble, then was helped from the court with what appeared to be an injury to his left knee with just under 4 minutes to play. He didn't return.

Spartans coach Tom Izzo wasn't sure how serious the injury was but wasn't happy how Green or the rest of his team played under pressure Tuesday.

"I didn't think we handled adversity very well at all," Izzo said. "My two best players had their worst games."

Green finished with five points and eight rebounds in 16 minutes. Keith Appling, the other half of the two Izzo singled out, had four points and four rebounds to go with five turnovers.

Paul led Illinois with 18 points.

He scored 13 of Illinois' 20 second-half points, but was 6 of 17 from the field. He was 5 of 9 from the free throw line and the Illini finished 9 of 17.

After burying those two late free throws, his misses on the 1-and-1s that followed gave the Spartans ? with Green on the end of the bench wincing in pain ? a chance to steal the game with 11 seconds to play.

But down 42-40, Michigan State's Derrick Nix missed the first of his two free throws. Appling then missed a driving shot with 2 seconds left, the final chance for the Spartans.

"He had a rough night," Izzo said of Appling. "When Draymond went out, he tried to take the game over. It's a shame because we had our chance and we didn't get it done."

Green hit a key layup in a 9-0 run that gave the Spartans a shot. They were up 36-35 with 5:01 to play. But just over a minute later he was being helped form the court.

With 2:09 left and Michigan State up 40-37, Illinois freshman Tracy Abrams hit a 3-pointer to tie the game.

After losing three games straight by a combined 11 points, Illinois badly needed to hold on against Michigan State, Abrams said.

"It shows toughness. Coach always says, `When things aren't going right, how do you respond as a team?'" Abrams said. "We stuck together."

Branden Dawson had 12 points for the Spartans.

While their shooting was awful, the Spartans pulled down 49 rebounds, 23 on the offensive end.

In the first half, the Spartans had more rebounds (22) than points, and trailed 22-20 at halftime.

Green spent the last 10:56 of the first half on the bench with three fouls, the last a technical when he complained about a foul call.

The technical cost Green a sharp chewing-out by Izzo as he took his place on the bench.

The game was physical, with Izzo complaining to the referees at one point, "They're killing us down here."

"This was WWE wrestling," Weber said.

Paul often matched up against Green, and relished seeing the big forward pile up fouls.

"He's obviously a great player and he does everything for them," Paul said. "I got a couple fouls on him early, and with him we probably should have capitalized on it more."

Given Michigan State's rough first half, it was hard to figure why Illinois headed to the locker room with a narrow two-point lead.

The Illini were 9 of 25 from the field after 20 minutes and 3 of 7 from the free throw line.

The biggest shots for Illinois in the first half were arguably two putbacks by freshman Myke Henry.

The first, off a miss by D.J. Richardson, put Illinois up 18-16 with 5:43 left. The second came with 34 seconds left, off another miss by Richardson, and gave the Illini their halftime lead.

Online game theft earns real-world conviction

THE HAGUE, Netherlands (AP) ? The Dutch Supreme Court has ruled that forcing a 13-year-old boy to relinquish a virtual mask and amulet in an online game amounted to real-world theft.

The Netherlands' highest court confirmed Tuesday that a boy who threatened the 13-year-old with a knife to make him drop the objects in the online fantasy game RuneScape was guilty of theft and ordered him to perform 144 hours of community service.

The court did not release the suspect's name, only his year of birth ? 1992. It said he and another youth beat and kicked the boy and threatened him with a knife until he logged into RuneScape and dropped the objects in 2007.

The court ruled the 13-year-old owned the virtual objects because of the time and energy he invested in winning them.

Japan Cabinet OKs bill to cap nuke reactor life (AP)

TOKYO ? Japan's Cabinet approved bills Tuesday aimed at bolstering nuclear safety regulations following last year's Fukushima disaster, including one that would put a 40-year cap on the operational life of nuclear reactors.

The approval came as International Atomic Energy Agency experts generally endorsed "stress test" results at two idled reactors in western Japan, bolstering the Tokyo government's efforts to restart the facility, though the IAEA team said some safety measures needed clarification.

Japan currently has no legal limit on the operational lifespan of its 54 reactors, many of which will reach the 40-year mark in coming years. One reactor at the Fukushima Dai-ichi plant had been in use 40 years when the tsunami struck last March.

The legislation, which still needs parliamentary approval to take effect, does allow for an extension of up to 20 years. Critics have blasted that exception as a loophole, but officials have said extensions will be rare and require strict safety standards.

Also Tuesday, the chief of Kawauchi village, which straddles the exclusion zone around the Fukushima plant, told more than 2,500 residents that returning to the town areas outside the no-go zone was safe, following extensive decontamination of radiation fallout.

Most residents whose homes were outside the exclusion zone chose to leave when the Kawauchi town hall moved to Koriyama City, about 40 kilometers (25 miles) away.

Mayor Yuko Endo said offices, schools and other public facilities will restart in April. Kawauchi is the first of nine townships whose administrative functions shifted elsewhere to make such an announcement.

"I encourage you to go home," Endo told a televised news conference from the Fukushima government office. "Those of you who can return now, please do so. If you are still worried, you can wait a little until you feel comfortable."

About one-third of Kawauchi village lies within the 12-mile (20-kilometer) exclusion zone and remains off-limits.

Since the government announced in December that the Fukushima plant was stable, guidelines have been made for affected towns that would allow residents to return to areas with contamination levels below 20 millisieverts per year, which it says is safe, though further reduction is recommended.

Another bill approved by the Cabinet would create a new nuclear regulatory agency under the Environment Ministry that would unify nuclear safety and regulatory bodies. The Nuclear and Industrial Safety Agency is currently under the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry ? which also promotes nuclear energy. Critics say that placement has contributed to lax supervision of the industry.

After the Fukushima accident, Japan reversed its nuclear energy policy and now aims to reduce its dependency on atomic power. Officials say capping the lives of reactors at 40 years is consistent with that policy.

Still, Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda has said Japan must rely on nuclear energy during the transition and idled reactors deemed safe after inspections need to be restarted.

The government has ordered reactors shut down since the meltdowns at Fukushima to undergo "stress tests" before they can be restarted. But passing the tests may not lead to a quick startup because of deep safety concerns in local communities hosting the reactors.

With only three of the country's 54 reactors online, officials are desperately trying to avoid a power crunch. One of the three operating reactors will go offline for regular checks next month, and Japan will have no operating reactors by the end of April.

Last week, a 10-member IAEA delegation inspected the Ohi No. 3 and No. 4 reactors at a nuclear plant in Fukui prefecture ? a rural area where 13 reactors are clustered around a bay. The reactors have undergone stress tests, which are supposed to assess whether they can withstand earthquakes, tsunamis, loss of power or other emergencies, and to suggest changes to improve safety.

The IAEA team was invited by Tokyo to visit the plant in a step seen as an attempt to drum up support for the government's safety campaign.

In a preliminary assessment Tuesday, the team said that Japanese nuclear safety officials' instructions to their operator, Kansai Electric Power Co., and the review process for the tests were "generally consistent" with IAEA safety standards.

However, the team said authorities should clarify the stress tests' goals and better define what constitutes the safety margins within which plants would be able to tolerate disasters. It also said the nuclear safety agency, or NISA, still needs to confirm certain improvements to safety before allowing the facility to resume operation.

Mission leader James Lyons said that the team was "satisfied with the work they had done as part of their primary assessment" but that there was room for improvement.

NISA chief Hiroyuki Fukano welcomed the IAEA review, saying authorities were "encouraged" that stress tests were deemed valid.

Critics, however, say the tests are meaningless because they have no clear criteria, and view the IAEA as biased toward the nuclear industry.

Newt's long march (Politico)

LUTZ, Fla. ? Mitt Romney and much of the GOP establishment may be exultant over Newt Gingrich?s likely defeat here Tuesday, but the former speaker has a message for his detractors: He?s not going anywhere.

Gingrich is making the case that Romney can?t get a majority at the convention, his small circle of advisers are already eyeing favorable states in March and April, and those close to the former back-bench bomb thrower are testifying to his legendary perseverance.

Florida may well be a painful body blow, but Gingrich appears deadly serious about a long, bloody march all the way to Tampa ? a scenario that is giving the GOP establishment nightmares.

At 68 and already 14 years past his speakership, this is likely Gingrich?s last chance at the political prize that he?s been coveting for at least two decades. He?s not Romney circa 2008 or Tim Pawlenty ? being a good soldier and falling in line in hopes of being rewarded four years hence isn?t an option.

And the new rules in which states will distribute their delegates proportionally instead of by winner-take-all rules means that Gingrich can keep accruing a sizable number of delegates even if Romney is besting him.

Further, Gingrich and his team see a wall of opposition among the party?s conservative activists to Romney and the stirrings of the same movement that upended the GOP establishment in the 2010 election. The diehards in the tea party movement may ultimately get behind Romney as the nominee, but not before exhausting their options.

Previewing his post-Florida message, Gingrich told reporters outside a megachurch here Sunday that he would seek to carry the Anybody But Mitt banner.

?When you take all the non-Romney votes, it?s very likely that at the convention there will be a non-Romney majority and maybe a very substantial one,? he said. ?My job is to convert that into a Gingrich majority.?

Such Tampa talk has key party leaders worried.

Even as they breathe a sigh of relief about Romney?s apparent Florida turnaround, some party establishment types are nonetheless bracing for a protracted and ugly fight between factions that the GOP hasn?t seen for decades.

?I think it could go on quite a while, which would not be to our benefit,? Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.), a Romney backer, said Sunday on NBC?s ?Meet the Press.?

It?s quite possible that, even if they fall short of the nomination, both Gingrich and Ron Paul could go into the convention with enough delegates to enjoy a measure of leverage over speaking roles and party platforms that would at the very least present a distraction.

A convention with a nominee and two empowered losers who won?t fade away quietly would be ?a real pill to swallow,? said one senior Republican.

?I believe multiple candidates are going to have enough delegates that they will expect and require attention at the convention,? the Republican said.

Another GOP veteran said he feared Tampa will resemble Houston in 1992, when Pat Buchanan had already lost to President George H.W. Bush but gave a pugnacious culture-war speech that overshadowed the incumbent?s message.

The topic of the calendar and a complicated convention was on the menu of discussion at a private lunch last week with Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus and a group of past RNC chairmen, according to sources present.
